Highlighting Conflict Resolution and Negotiation Strategies
The presentation highlights conflict resolution and negotiation strategies, drawing on Bernard Mayer, Thomas Kilmann, and Fisher & Ury’s Getting to Yes to stress the importance of asking not only what people want but also why. It incorporates research on juvenile justice disparities, noting that students with disabilities and students of color are disproportionately disciplined and that up to 60% of youth in the justice system have disabilities. Mediation and facilitation are shown to be effective because family engagement improves communication, boosts student performance, and reduces risky behaviors. Practical tools and relationship-building principles, including those from Dale Carnegie, are offered to help parties find agreement, build trust, and create lasting solutions.
